Running: My Must Haves

As previously mentioned, my dad is a serial marathon runner. My brother and I refer to his running shorts as “Spinning Around Shorts”, or “SAS” due to their uncanny resemblance to Kylie’s hot-pants. Are you an offensively high-cut pair with built-in jocks? Consider yourself owned by my dad. Think you will just be worn during a run? Well I’m gonna have to stop you there, because you’re wrong.

Dad considers his running shorts to be a trans-seasonal wardrobe essential, almost as if he may need to drop whatever he may be doing at the time, to go for a run. This look is best accessorised preferably with no shirt and no worries, and if you have ever been to my parents’ house, chances are you have seen him in this get up. It appears to be a popular outfit choice for watering the garden while drinking a beer, meeting a boyfriend for the first time or when guests pop over for a coffee. In his defense he has a dynamite pair of pins without an ounce of fat, which I could only dream of having. If you've got it, flaunt it.

While I have definitely cut back on the longer distance runs I used to do while training for the half ironman I completed a few years ago in Busselton with my incredible friends Sian doing the swim, and Ash doing the ride, I still aim to do 2 or 3 shorter distance (between 5-8kms) runs each week.

My non-negotiables when it comes to running are as follows:

  • A beautiful location, preferably near water of some kind
  • RunKeeper app – records your runs and times, and gives you updates on your pace at each kilometre
  • Lululemon Run:Inspire Crop tights – pricey, but a worthwhile investment. I will not wear anything else
  • Nike Lunarknits or Mizuno Wave Riders
  • A hat - if like me, during a run, bear a resemblance to Smeagol from Lord of The Rings, then it’s probably best for everyone if you contain this unrivaled glamour by hiding you face. Bonus points for also wearing sunglasses
  • A kick-ass playlist – no music=no run. I get bored so easily and it’s a great distraction/motivator while you are running. My current faves are:

Drake “Started from the bottom”
Aloe Blacc “The man”
Rudimental feat Emelie Sande “Free”
Iggy Azalea “Work”
Busta Rhymes & Q Tip “Thank you”
Avicii “You make me”
Afrojack “The spark”
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis “Can’t hold us”
Empire of the Sun “Alive” (Zedd remix)
Havana Brown “Warrior”

  • Post run hydrating drink – Coconut water aka “natures Gatorade” according to Eli
stay tuned for some of my fave routes to go running around Perth or to catch up with one of the girls over a walk and a much needed coffee....
