Big Apple: Week 1

Greetings from the city that never sleeps! Since I can remember, I have been fascinated by New York City. I has remained at the top of my travel wish list, and whilst I have travelled throughout Europe and most of Asia, I have never made the journey to the US of A. I feel incredibly blessed to finally explore the city of my dreams with the man of my dreams.

I simply cannot describe how magical this place is. Words simply cannot do it justice. There is just something about the vibe, the buzz, the people, the architecture, the food, everything. We are staying in a cute little studio in the West Village, close to the Chelsea Markets, High Line, Pastis and plenty of great shops, cafes and restaurants.
Apart from one subway ride to Brooklyn, we have walked everywhere, including to and around Brooklyn and back (I think this worked out to be about a 20km round trip).

I feel like we have crammed so much into such a small amount of time and that there is still so much to see and do, but just a few highlights include:

  • Walking across the Brooklyn bridge and around DUMBO, a must see if you are in Brooklyn
  • Sitting on the stairs of the NY Post Office with a coffee and people watching
  • Trying to stay warm with chai lattes
  • Whole Foods Market. Period. This place rocks my world
  • Seeing Central Park for the first time by horse and carriage and is starts snowing!
  • Catching the subway on Christmas day to watch the Brooklyn Nets play the Chicago Bulls at the Barclays Centre
  • Strolling along the High Line, an old railway line that has been converted into a public garden path
Trying to embrace a relaxed diet and exercise regime while I'm on holiday is really hard, I'm terrified that it's going to be a huge struggle to get back into it once I'm in Perth, especially given I am eating pizza, pasta, cupcakes, cronuts (half croissant, half doughnut, a must). YOLO!

If I had to pick one fault, it would be waking up at 4:00am on Christmas morning to the lady who lives next door who is slightly bananas singing "A whole new world" at the top of her lungs. for an hour. completely out of tune. giving zero fucks to anyone who might have been extremely jet lagged *The President and I slowly raise our hands* and desperately in need of the zzzz's.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones and look forward to checking in again next week.

xx

  1. Shannon, Andrew and I loved hosting you and the Prez in our City - I'm sure the wacky singing neighbor misses you as well -- but you wouldn't have had THE true NYC experience if not for a wacky, inconsiderate neighbor (and a frozen water pipe or two). Please keep in touch and we hope you visit us again before too long! Love the blog and thanks for all the tips!! x
